History for Northern Ireland Key Stage 3: Ireland
1169-1500

Specifically designed for the revised curriculum for Northern Ireland,
History for Northern Ireland Key Stage 3 is a three-book course which:
- Is organised chronologically from 1169 to the
present day and structured around stimulating thematic enquiries which
examine change over time
- Has an active learning approach
- Features summative tasks at the end of the enquiries
which provide excellent opportunities for assessment for learning
- Includes a wide variety of activities, designed
to develop whole curriculum skills and capabilities as well as key
historical skills
- Has been shaped to integrate key elements –
giving the historical enquiries relevance to the modern world
Course Information:
Ireland 1169-1500 starts with a bridging unit, designed to ease the
transition from primary school, that focuses on the skills a historian
needs. It then goes on to look at the idea of identity and how our identity
is shaped by the past. This leads into stimulating historical enquiries
within the period , including:
- Why did the Normans invade Ireland in 1169?
- What were people in the past really like?
- How did life in Ireland change during the period
1169-1500?
- Who’s who in Medieval Ireland?
- What was health and medicine like in the Middle
Ages?
- Did the Normans leave us anything worth keeping?
It concludes by asking the students to evaluate what they have learnt
and to look forward to year 9 – particularly focusing on how to
develop their historical skills further.
